Traumatic Head Injury talk with Q&As
Presented by Paul Edwards and Jen Catterill (Hannover Re)

Select 74 held a free online talk  on Tuesday 5th November at 11.30am on Traumatic Head Injury, presented by Paul Edwards and Jen Catterill from Hannover Re.

The presentation from this event is now available in the Presentation tab on this website.

Traumatic Head Injury

A recent high profile court case involving well known stars of rugby and its ruling bodies has highlighted the issue of sporting related head trauma, particularly involving concussion. In our talk we look at the underlying mechanism and primary disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy and its links to other neurodegenerative diseases. We discuss the medical research, possible impacts on critical illness and discuss claims and how difficult the condition is to assess as well as the limitations of CI definitions in the context of traumatic head injuries.

Speakers

Paul Edwards is an industry veteran of some 30 years (he’s not sure how that happened!), and worked for a number of direct offices, including Allied Dunbar/Zurich and AXA/Aviva, before joining the reinsurer part of the industry in 2011 at Partner Re. Paul has been with Hannover Re for 10 years. In that time, he had a two-year secondment to the actuarial biometric team, before returning to lead the UK branch UWR&D team. His team’s role is to be a conduit between pricing and underwriting and claims colleagues, and to deliver high quality research into medical and other risks, as well as managing underwriting tools for internal and external partners. Outside the industry, Paul is a Sci-Fi and history geek, has a serious vinyl habit, and loves going to live gigs. His family consists of partner Gina, three children, a mad cockerpoo and an eternally hungry pug.

Jen Catterill has worked in the insurance industry for 23 years, both in a reinsurer and direct office environment. She’s just celebrated her 10-year anniversary at Hannover Re and currently works as a Claims Specialist and Deputy Claims Manager within the Underwriting and Claims Department. In addition to her day job, Jen is veteran member of the Health Claims Forum, helping run a varied and thought-provoking programme of both virtual and face-to-face events for claims assessors and underwriters alike. Once an avid traveller and CII exam taker, Jen now spends her free time instead travelling the world of soft plays and the occasional gin bar, keeping fit and enjoying being by the seaside in sunny Brighton.
